the good news:
Organisations are STARVING on a diet of bolt-ons (and drowning in a billion AI tools, dashboards, digital platforms, apps). Each one of these solutions promises to revolutionise how we work.
I’d like to invite you to ponder the following question: have any of these made your work life more meaningful, connected, efficient, fun, purposeful, or have they just created more…. clutter?
We are in a new phase of organisational development and transformation. One where innovation is no longer a standalone project and bolting something new onto an old engine and hoping it will run better has seen better days. There’s no need to feel shame if you are the KWEEN of bolt-ons though, many organisations are. It’s a classic case of when we know better, do better. So, today I’d like to share with you the secret of moving forward in perfect alignment and achieve the kind of change that sparks the kind of excitement and joy as eating cotton candy for the first time.
Why are we addicted to bolt ons?
It’s very simple.
They’re quick.
Cheap.
They photograph well in your annual report.
They’re great at showing you are doing SOMETHING and in the fast paced world of today doing SOMETHING FAST.
It’s TEMPTING to implement the next shiny, sparkly, exciting thing. It’s PALPABLE. But, what you need to ask yourself is – have they resolved the friction points you needed to solve? No, really. If you’re honest with yourself in this space, underneath it all? You know like misaligned systems, unclear strategy, patchy communication, and teams who don’t know why the new tool even matters (are they even using it?)
It’s like fitting a Formula One spoiler to a 1999 Corolla and wondering why you’re still stuck in traffic (side note: I loved my Corolla back in the day. LOVED. I cried when I sold it after 14 years of loving it).
BUT.
We can’t deny that bolt-ons make teams feel like change is being done to them, not with them. And leaders, who always have the right intentions, are left scratching their heads wondering why progress has not materialised, despite all the investment. Do we need another bolt-on?
No. No you do not.
You need something that might not sound as glamorous, but it works.
Transformation from within is slower… But it sticks.
True organisation transformation doesn’t come from an app or a soulless rebrand. It comes from re-engineering how an organisation thinks, decides and behaves.
It’s real work that addresses the root causes of problems, aligns mechanisms and people, amplifies human capability, builds confidence.
It’s the difference between lots of instruments playing at the same time out of tune and a symphony.
Why this matters now
The nature and sentiment of business has changed. We can’t keep hiding behind bolt on solutions (tech and non tech) instead of re-wiring how we work. Organisations are being exposed to risk all over the place in the current climate and longstanding industry disruption is in progress. Where would you like to be at the end of it all? On fire, floundering behind your competitors? Or leading it?
Good change is meant to feel good and be exciting. It’s authentic, rewarding and sticks. The real power belongs to leaders willing to pause, go deeper and change from within. You ready?
